There are lionesses, and then there is Gamma.
On Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, where the Namib Desert meets the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, live some of the most extraordinary lionesses on Earth. These desert-adapted lions have evolved to survive in an environment where most predators simply could not. No fresh water. No shade. Just endless stretches of sand and wind.
Gamma is one of them. Photographed in 2024 on this legendary coastline, she walks across the wet sand with the ocean behind her, as though two impossible worlds had agreed to meet.
The Skeleton Coast takes its name from the whale bones and shipwrecks scattered along its shores. Today, Gamma is its queen. The sovereign of a kingdom that few humans are fortunate enough to cross—and fewer still have the privilege of photographing.
