The largest land animal on Earth. And on its back, a small white bird standing there as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Because it is.
In Kenya in 2024, I captured one of those moments of pure grace that nature offers without warning. An oxpecker, that small white bird so closely associated with Africa’s great mammals, perched on the back of an elephant. Two worlds, two scales, a single image.
This was no coincidence. It was a relationship. The oxpecker frees the elephant from parasites, while the elephant provides the oxpecker with both a perch and a source of food. Nature, when left undisturbed, creates alliances that human imagination would scarcely dare to conceive.
